THE BERMUDA HIGH SOARING SCHOOL STAFF

THE KEY TO YOUR SUCCESSFUL TRAINING IS THE EXPERIENCE AND BACKGROUND OF THE STAFF AT THE TRAINING FACILITY YOU CHOOSE. WE PROUDLY PRESENT THE PROFESSIONAL STAFF AT BERMUDA HIGH SOARING SCHOOL.

Frank Reid--Chief Flight Instructor, FAA Designated Examiner.

Frank took one ride in a sailplane in 1985 and was totally hooked on flying sailplanes. He left the corporate world and began his flying career. In six months he had his sailplane instructor rating and his single engine rating and had started a soaring operation with Wilson Brown, Southern Soaring, in NC. He met Jayne at a soaring contest in 1986 and the rest is history. Frank has over 6,500 hours flying sailplanes and over 4,500 hours instructing in sailplanes. Frank is the former Chairman of the Board of the Soaring Society of America. He held this position from January 1st, 1999 to 2001. He was also the Region 5 director from 1995 through 2002 representing the members of the Soaring Society in 7 southeastern states:  North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Tennessee, Alabama, and Mississippi. Frank, along with Jayne Reid was awarded the Warren E. Eaton Memorial Trophy, the SSA's highest award, in 2002.

Jayne Reid--Chief Tow Pilot

Jayne has been flying sailplanes since 1978. She learned to fly at Bermuda High Soaring while at the same time earning her BS in nursing. She used to "run the lines" on weekends at Bermuda High in exchange for flight time. Taught by Ret. Air Force Col. Charles Heckel, she learned the "ropes" and decided early on that soaring would be a big part of her life. In April, 1986 while helping with the Region V North Contest she met Frank Reid who brought a tow plane to the contest. She and Frank decided to buy Bermuda High that fall of 1986. She now spends more time in the glider than the towplane, but enjoys each equally.  Jayne, along with Frank was awarded the Warren E. Eaton Memorial Trophy, the SSA's highest award, in 2002.

Ivan Snell--Flight Instructor

Ivan learned to fly with the London Gliding Club. He moved to the US in 1967 and flew with the Rochester Soaring Club (Finger Lakes Soaring) in Dansville, NY until 1992. From 1988 through 1992 he was their Chief Instructor. In 1995 Ivan relocated to Columbia, SC and started flying with Bermuda High. Ivan also enjoys flying the PW5 of which he is a co-owner.

Alan Smith--Flight Instructor

Alan has been flying gliders for 5 years.  When not instructing he flies his ASW 15.  He lives in Charlotte, NC, and works in research and marketing for a large chemical company. His other hobbies include playing the viola and violin making.

Keith Ross--Tow Pilot

Keith lives in Lumberton, NC, and in 2003 began regularly towing for us.

Thomas Robinson--Tow Pilot

Thomas was born and bred right here in the Flat Creek area of Lancaster County.  Bermuda High is extremely fortunate to have someone with his talents as a neighbor.  Thomas, who retired from Dupont several years ago, has his commercial ratings in both gliders and airplanes. He is also an FAA A&P mechanic.  It is Thomas who keeps everything running at Bermuda High. From golf carts to mowers to airplanes, it is Thomas whom we call at all hours to come fix whatever it is that has broken.  Thomas is completing his second home built airplane and hopes to have it flying this spring.  Additionally, rumor (and indeed fact) has it that Thomas, earlier in his life, had quite a reputation in South Carolina as both a builder and driver of dirt track modified stock cars.

Aaron resides in Bishopville, SC.  He soloed a glider on November 12th, 1999, and is now a commercial glider pilot.  Aaron also has considerable time flying crop-duster, so he is a natural as a tow pilot!
